New Urbanism
New Urbanism was derived by architects and planners who examine the total fabric or our built environment. It is a goal of New Urbanists to create traditional, human-scale, walkable communities that are both functional and sustainable. This outlook on design supports regional planning, context-appropriate architecture, and the balanced development of jobs and housing.
There are a variety of ways to approach the concept of New Urbanism. Some participants work exclusively on infill projects, others focus on transit-oriented development, and still others attempt to transform the suburbs. Many advocates work on all of these categories.
Syvertsen Rigosu Architects houses traditional architects with modernist sensibilities, allowing New Urbanism to precisely display their best attributes. Currently, our firm is actively utilizing New Urbanism as a method of development and design in New York, Virginia, and Connecticut.
Our services generally begin with a site evaluation and analysis of the architectural character of an entire neighborhood and then focus on individual buildings. Our attention to detail in the analysis of architectural character is imperative to our urban design process. Our urban design process is iterative, inclusive, and typically involves workshops with constituent groups and presentations to other relevant groups. We are committed to assisting clients define their mission and goals and implementing them in the design process. Our design solutions are geared to the scale of the pedestrian and promote an interdependent relationship between the pedestrian, urban development, and public transportation.
